By choosing us, you choose greener

From the establishment of Forchem in 2002, the company's entire operations have been guided by green values. All of our production processes have been designed according to the principles of sustainable development, which means that they result in a minimal environmental footprint.

To indicate our environmental sustainability and corporate responsibility we decided to calculate carbon footprint for entire production operations starting from year 2008.

Carbon footprint was calculated for Forchem’s production and logistics operations. The calculation included the emissions from the Forchem Rauma production unit, raw material logistics and business travel from year 2008.

Growing with the nature

txt majoraddedvalueForchem utilizes 99 % renewable energy which is produced from our own raw material and other wood-based biofuels. Wood-based bioenergy is carbon neutral since growing trees bind the emitted carbon dioxide from air. Due to this, the carbon footprint of the relatively energy-intensive tall oil distillation process is low.

The Rauma production unit is also located close to the raw material sources, the pulp mills which produce the crude tall oil. This enables efficient logistic chains and thereby reduced overall emissions.

The raw material of Forchem chemical products, crude tall oil is a natural product, originally a by-product, derived from the pine trees. This gives a good starting point for the product-specific carbon footprint assessment related to fossil-based chemicals.

An assessment was also carried out on climate impacts of tall oil products compared with emission reductions enabled by the end use of the products. A liquid biofuel Fortop600 was selected as a case product for the assessment. Read more about this greenovation!

The remarkable light carbon footprint of Forchem and its products is well in line and above with national and international environmental goals which we consider to bring major added value to our customers and partners.

Carbon footprint

Carbon footprint is the total set of carbon dioxide emissions caused directly and indirectly by an individual, organisation, event or a product.

For the calculation we used the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) developed by World Resources Institute and World Business Council for Sustainable Development.  GHG Protocol is the most widely used international accounting tool to understand, quantify, and manage greenhouse gas emissions.
