Sellunvalmistuksessa sivutuotteena syntyv\u00e4n raakam\u00e4nty\u00f6ljyn tislaukseen ja jalostamiseen erikoistunut Forchem Oy rakentaa kasvisterolitehtaan Rauman tehtaansa yhteyteen. Tavoitteena on maailman suurimpiin kuuluva sterolien jalostuslaitos.<\/p>\n

Alansa huipputeknologiaa hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4v\u00e4 Forchem Oy aloitti toimintansa vasta pari vuotta sitten, mutta jo nyt se on kyennyt sek\u00e4 laajentamaan tuotantoaan ett\u00e4 kehitt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n monta uutta m\u00e4nty\u00f6ljypohjaista innovatiivista tuotetta kemian teollisuuden k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n.<\/p>\n

Raumalle suunniteltu tuotantoprosessi erottelee m\u00e4nty\u00f6ljyst\u00e4 betasitosterolia, jolla on todettu olevan eritt\u00e4in monipuolisia terveysvaikutuksia mm. funktionaalisissa elintarvikkeissa. Hankkeen toteutuessa tehdas tulee valmistamaan kasvisteroleita noin 4000 – 6000 tonnia vuodessa. N\u00e4in ollen se tulee olemaan ylivoimaisesti alansa suurin tehdas Euroopassa ja maailmaltakin l\u00f6ytyy vain yksi vastaavaan kapasiteettiin ylt\u00e4v\u00e4 yritys. Investoinnin arvo on 40 miljoonaa euroa.<\/p>\n

Tuote markkinoidaan maailmanlaajuisesti elintarviketeollisuudelle ja sen alihankkijoille. Kasvisterolit ovat osoittautuneet eritt\u00e4in tehokkaiksi veren kolesterolitason alentajiksi. Ne v\u00e4hent\u00e4v\u00e4t kolesterolin imeytymist\u00e4 verenkiertoon, mink\u00e4 seurauksena kolesterolitaso alenee.<\/p>\n

Toistaiseksi steroleita onkin k\u00e4ytetty l\u00e4hinn\u00e4 ravintorasvoissa ja maitotuotteissa, mutta viimeisimmiss\u00e4 tutkimuksissa on havaittu, ett\u00e4 steroleista on hy\u00f6ty\u00e4 my\u00f6s rasvattomissa tuotteissa. Kolesteroli laskee esimerkiksi appelsiinimehuun lis\u00e4tyn kasvisterolin avulla.<\/p>\n

Alan asiantuntijat arvioivat, ett\u00e4 uusia kasvisteroli-innovaatioita syntyy l\u00e4hitulevaisuudessa runsaasti. Euroopan kasvisterolimarkkinat olivat 2003 arvoltaan noin 75 miljoonaa dollaria.
